Định mức nguyên liệu gián tiếp luôn được sử dụng trong đa định mức nguyên liệu. Nó được sử dụng để thêm vào một sản phẩm trung gian trong quy trình thành phẩm nhưng tránh được việc kích hoạt một quy trình sản xuất riêng cho từng sản phẩm phụ.
Theo đó, khi xây dựng một quy trình sản xuất cho thành phẩm, các sản phẩm trung gian được đưa vào ĐMNL chính như là một nguyên liệu của ĐMNL chính.
Do vậy, ĐMNL gián tiếp có thể được sử dụng trong nhiều ĐMNL mà không cần phải kích hoạt các quy trình sản xuất riêng biệt cho các sản phẩm trung gian.
